What To Do in Cape Town When You Close the Laptop

Every Cape Town guide tells you to hike Lion's Head and taste wine in Stellenbosch.

They are not wrong. But they are all saying the same thing.

I am Bertila, founder of Zenvivas. I have been mapping Cape Town's workspace scene and speaking directly to the people building its nomad community. What follows is the lifestyle guide that comes from those conversations, not from a list of tourist attractions scraped from TripAdvisor.

Cape Town is not just a beautiful place to work remotely. It is the city where Africa's nomad future is being decided. The people you meet here, the events you attend, the connections you make between meetings, are the reason people come back year after year. Here is what actually matters.

January: Nomad Week Cape Town. Plan Your Visit Around This.

If there is one thing I would tell every nomad considering Cape Town, it is this: time your first visit to arrive during Nomad Week.

Nomad Week Cape Town was founded by Andrae Smith, who started hosting intimate dinners for nomads in 2021 and built it into one of the most important gatherings in the global nomad calendar. The 2026 edition brought over 300 digital nomads, entrepreneurs, and remote professionals together for a full week of keynote talks, unconference sessions, outdoor adventures, and genuine community building.

What makes it different from every other nomad conference: 40 percent of attendees are South African. This is not a foreign nomad bubble. It is the event where the international remote work community meets the African professional community that is building the continent's future. Yacht cruises. Winelands day trips. Speed networking that actually leads to real collaborations. An Africa Pitch Competition where aspiring entrepreneurs gain free digital skills training and pitch for prizes.

The 2027 edition runs in late January. Mark it now. It is the fastest way to find your people in Cape Town and the connections you make during Nomad Week are the ones that follow you out of the city.

Zenvivas has a direct relationship with Andrae Smith and Work Wanderers. We will publish the 2027 dates and registration details on this page the moment they are confirmed.

September: GCUC Africa. The Workspace Industry Comes to Cape Town.

If Nomad Week is for the community, GCUC Africa is for the industry.

The Global Coworking Unconference Conference held its first ever Africa edition in Cape Town in September 2026 at The Avenue at the Two Oceans Aquarium on the V&A Waterfront. Workshop17, Neighbourgood, AfricaWorks, KOFISI, BongoHive, and PONT were all in the room. The conversations happening at GCUC Africa are the ones that shape which spaces get built, which cities get mapped, and which operators get the investment to grow.

For nomads who are building businesses with an African market component, being in Cape Town during GCUC Africa puts you in the same room as the people making those decisions.

Zenvivas was tracking GCUC Africa 2026 in real time. We will publish 2027 dates and session details on this page as they are confirmed.

Work From the World's Coolest Street.

Time Out Cape Town named Kloof Street one of the world's coolest streets in November 2025. That is not marketing copy. That is editorial recognition from one of the most respected city guides in the world.

Kloof Street in Gardens runs through the heart of Cape Town's creative and startup district. Workshop17 Kloof Street is here at 32 Kloof Street. So is Neighbourgood. So is a concentration of independent restaurants, specialty coffee shops, bookstores, and the kind of neighborhood energy that makes every working lunch feel like a deliberate lifestyle choice rather than a break in the routine.

If you are based in Gardens and you are not starting your working day with a walk down Kloof Street for coffee before you open your laptop, you are missing the thing that makes this neighborhood worth choosing.

Lion's Head at Sunrise. Do This First. Before Anything Else.

Yes, every guide says this. They say it because it is true and because the guides that do not say it are wrong.

Hike Lion's Head at sunrise on your first or second morning in Cape Town. It takes 90 minutes up and 60 minutes down. You do not need a guide. The trail is well-marked and well-used. Entry is free. Start before 5:30am.

When you reach the top as the sun comes over the Hottentots Holland mountains with Table Mountain behind you and the Atlantic in front and the entire Cape Peninsula laid out below, you understand immediately why people who come to Cape Town for a month end up staying for six.

This is the experience that resets your relationship with wherever you have been working from before this.

The Neighbourgood Sundowner. Your Fastest Path to Community Without Attending a Conference.

If Nomad Week is not running when you arrive, go to a Neighbourgood community event within your first week.

Their rooftop at 84 Harrington Street runs regular sundowners that draw founders, creatives, long-term nomads, and Cape Town locals who work in tech and startups. Murray Clark, Neighbourgood's co-founder and one of the most connected people in Africa's coworking conversation, is frequently there. GCUC Africa held its evening networking event at this rooftop in September 2026.

This is not a networking event in the corporate sense. It is the kind of gathering where you have a real conversation over a real drink with someone who is building something interesting. The connections you make here are different from the ones you make in a conference room.

Check Neighbourgood's Instagram for upcoming event dates before you arrive.

Muizenberg Beach. Learn to Surf. Even If You Think You Cannot.

Thirty minutes from the city center by car or by train from Cape Town station. The most consistent beginner surf beach in Africa. Possibly in the world.

A two-hour surf lesson costs R500. By the end of it most people are standing. By the third lesson most people are hooked. The beach café scene in Muizenberg, the colorful Victorian beach huts, Café Roux, and the surf shops along the main strip, gives you a Cape Town experience completely different from anything in the city bowl.

The nomad rhythm that works best in Muizenberg: early morning surf lesson before the wind picks up, late morning laptop session at a café, afternoon in the water or walking the coastal path to Kalk Bay. It is the most complete work-life integration day Cape Town offers.

The Winelands. Non-Negotiable. Do Not Leave Without This.

Stellenbosch is 45 minutes by car. One of the finest wine regions in the world producing wines that would cost three to four times as much in Europe.

A wine tasting at a Stellenbosch estate costs R100 to R200 per person. A long lunch at a Franschhoek restaurant with wine pairing runs R400 to R600. Book a private driver or join a tour because you will want to try everything.

Go on a Friday and make a weekend of it. Stay in Franschhoek if budget allows. The morning light on the mountains and the vineyards from a Franschhoek guesthouse is the kind of thing that changes what you think a working trip to Africa can look like.

Boulders Beach. African Penguins. Yes Really.

One hour from Cape Town toward Simon's Town. African penguins in their natural habitat. You swim in the same cove they swim in.

Entry costs R240 for adults. Go on a weekday morning. The weekend crowds are significant and the penguin experience is genuinely different when you have space to observe rather than navigate.

The marine biologists who manage the colony are frequently on site. Ask them about the conservation program. The answer is always more interesting than you expect.

Cape Point and the Peninsula Drive. Your Best Full Day in Africa.

Reserve a full day. Drive the Cape Peninsula from the city through Hout Bay, over Chapman's Peak, through Noordhoek, to Cape Point at the southern tip of the continent. The drive itself is one of the most spectacular coastal roads on earth.

Cape Point Nature Reserve entry costs R353 for adults. On the way back stop in Kalk Bay for fresh fish at the harbour restaurants and the antique shops on the main street.

This is the day that makes Cape Town feel earned rather than just convenient.
